Extra-special artisan crackers
Making crackers is both fun and an activity that can be shared with children, even quite young children. While there might be a bit of a floury mess afterward, and trying to discern what shape the crackers are might be tricky, the process is enjoyable and you’ll have something tasty for morning tea at the end of your baking time.
You can get creative, allowing some freedom and play and can be surprised with how much of this children can do by themselves.
The recipe is simple and you can make it with regular flour or gluten free flour, you can add some herbs or spices, cheese or salt.
You really can’t go wrong (my favourite sort of recipe!)
There’s lots of work for little hands to do in mixing, rolling out the dough, cutting with a butter knife, pricking with a fork and creating beautiful shapes.
It might just remind you of some songs you know from childhood. (Pat-a-cake)
Recipe
2 cups of flour (gluten free or wheat flour)
⅔ cup of water (tap water is fine)
2 teaspoons of olive oil.
And some instructions if you like them…
When the dough is mixed and formed into small balls - it can be good to add a good amount of dry flour to make the dough less sticky. You can also add flour onto the rolling pin and onto children’s (and your own) hands.
Placing a square of baking paper down, if you have some, you can hand over the dough and the roller and see what happens.
You might like to make some crackers alongside your little one, giving an example of one way to roll and shape.
When everyone’s happy with their creations, pop them on an oven tray.
You can add your special extras, seeds, herbs, grated cheese or anything else that takes your fancy.
a few grinds of salt and a bit of olive oil and you’re done!
Now you’re ready to begin baking, have the oven around 200 degrees, and bake for approx 12 minutes. After this, take a little peek and if you’d like to, and if they need it, turn them over and bake for another 5 - 10 minutes.
After cooling your creations on the bench you have some specialty artisan crackers for your snack boxes.
Enjoy!
