Gathering treasures

Families are busy, we rush here and there, kids in tow. So for a few special years the pram becomes a vital part of the household fleet. Did you know there are lots of benefits of walking with a pram for both parents and children?

Pram-walking gives new parents an opportunity to exercise without costs or special equipment. It gives children a chance to enjoy your company, get fresh air, and see the world from a unique perspective.

Any pram-walk can be an opportunity to chat with your child, and draw their attention to the world around them.

As you head off down the street together, take time to point out flowers or birds or trees or other glimpses of the natural world. Encourage your child to look at things at a distance and up close. Help them to name the things they see, and focus on their own senses. Keep a plastic bag in the pram to collect any treasures you may find along naturestrips or in the park... seeds or cones, leaves or feathers.  By chatting about the things they see you are helping your child to appreciate and relate to the world around them.

Keep a box or bowl at home for the items collected on your walks. Chat about their shape, size, texture and colour; make comparisons and contrasts.  Let the child rummage around, sort or arrange them. Include them in some artwork... add a glue stick or tape, paper or cardboard (an old cereal box will do), and make a collage masterpiece.
