What will YOU create today?
Do you spend time and energy each week encouraging your little one to be creative?
Perhaps you have a ‘making box’ and set your child up with paint, glue and all the bits and pieces they need to create a masterpiece (AND willingly clean up the mess afterwards!)
Or you go to ‘singing land’ together and make up songs as you walk to the park
Or you patiently sit under a tree, helping your child make a mandala out of leaves and petals collected from the garden
Or maybe you open the dress-up box and sit in the audience for yet another grand performance by your budding star
If you value creativity, giving your chid opportunities to explore and be creative is no doubt a part of your everyday life.
But do you make time for YOU to be creative? Every parent knows that whether we like it or not, our children watch what we do and copy our behaviour, often (much to our horror) choosing our least desirable habits to emulate!
So it makes sense that if we want our children to be creative then we should show them how important creativity is on our own lives.
Maybe next time they are painting a rainbow you could pull out your own sketch pad?
Or find your high school guitar and learn to play a favourite song?
Why not try a new skill - weaving, embroidery, macrame, felting - the possibilities are endless…
Or join a choir, theatre group or orchestra and really step out onto the stage!
Maybe you’ll make a grand commitment or maybe a tiny gesture (particularly if you have very little people in your life). But be assured that your little ones will be watching and learning that:
There is much joy to be found in a lifetime of creativity
Mistakes are an integral part of the creative process
Skills take time to develop and practice is worthy and rewarding
Things made with love and care are priceless and should be treasured
The very best of friends can be made over shared creative endeavours!
Once a fortnight I gather with a bunch of creative friends. We bring a project we’re working on, pour a cuppa and solve the world’s big issues while we knit, crochet, embroider, felt and stitch. It feeds my soul and shows my (big) kids that being creative is a life-long pursuit.
Right now I’m mastering the art of knitting gloves. Left hand down, now on to the right… What will YOU create today?
