Seed Bombs

Seed Bombs

This last week here in Victoria you can really feel it, - that movement of the year as it turns towards the warmer months.

Feeling the sunshine, hearing the bees out and about, having a night when you didn’t need your hot water bottle, and finding that little bit more light at the start and end of the day.

This is such a beautiful time of year - and the noticing of the changes is one of the things that make it special. Traditionally Irish people have celebrated the first day of spring with Imbolg - which comes from the word imbolc meaning “in the belly” - referring to the ewes pregnant with their spring lambs.

What an amazing description for this time of year, this week is full of that expectation.

And with it comes that strong desire to get out in the garden and plant.

Making seed bombs is both fun and tactile way of engaging children in planting and, … added bonus, it’s easy!

What you’ll need.

  • Some seeds - a few suggestions include; cosmos, california poppy and cornflower. They are beautiful editions to the garden, sprout pretty quickly and give you some amazing flowers to make potions with, press, pound or pop in a vase. These are also easy to collect the seed from and use for planting in future years.

  • Some mud - just dig up some from your garden, a more clay-type soil is going to hold together a bit better (you can also get a clay and compost mix at hardware stores or may be able to source a clay powder to add to your mix at a craft store)

  • Water - just enough to make the soil mix wet and hold together the mud balls.

Now mix your seeds in with your soil mix in a bucket - something like 5 cups of soil and a half cup of seeds is a good start. Add water slowly to see how much you need - if anyone goes overboard adding water - just add more mud!

Make some mud balls with your mixture, rolling them around in your hand.

Leave these in the sun to dry.

Now you’re ready to throw your seed bombs out into the garden in some bare patches and wait to see what comes up.

Have fun!
